Abstract

|
In the 122 epileptic patients attending the neurologic, department of SNUH during the last two years, side effects of dilantin and phenobarbital by combined longterm therapy were observed in relation to the duration of the medication and to the dosage.
Among the side effects of the above-mentioned combined therapy, gum hypertrophy and G-I trouble tend to increase in relation to the duration of the medication, but blurred vision and drowsiness tend to be related to the dosage, while diplopia, ataxia, dysarthria and skin rashes tent to increase in relation to the duration and dosage, although these tendency were statistically not significant except gum hypertrophy.
The related pathophysiologic mechanisms of the above-mentioned side effects are briefly discussed.
